Tattoo Aftercare and FAQ’s

GRIFFIN SALVE

  • Make sure your hands are clean before you touch your tattoo, every time!

  • Wash your tattoo in lukewarm water with an unscented liquid anti-bacterial soap.

  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Don't use a fabric towel to avoid fabric fibers getting stuck in your new tattoo.

  • Next, apply a very thin layer of Griffin Salve, or if unavailable use unscented Lubriderm or any other gentle unscented lotion.

  • Repeat the wash and lotion process every 3-4 hours until your tattoo is done peeling.

  • The healing process should take approximately two weeks. Some scabbing and peeling is totally normal.

RECOVERY DERM

  • Leave Recovery Derm on for no less than 3 days, no more than 7 days

  • Plasma may reside underneath bandage (this is normal)

  • If bandage leaks you must remove bandage and continue normal after care (as seen above). If anything can get out of your bandage, bacteria can get in.

  • DO NOT use if allergic to adhesive (if irritation occurs during use please remove bandage and continue normal aftercare).

FAQ’s

  • What to do if Derm leaks?

Remove the Derm and continue aftercare with lotion (see aftercare tab for instructions)

  • What is an Ink Sack?

An ink sack is when blood, plasma, and ink collect under the derm bandage. It looks like a dark liquid under the bandage. Don’t worry, the ink sack is normal.

  • Is redness and swelling normal around my tattoo?

Minimal redness and swelling is normal because tattoos are wounds to the skin. Irritation may occur as with any other wound to the skin.

  • What do I do if I think my tattoo is infected?

We recommend you see your primary care physician if you are worried about infection. Infection is very unlikely if you follow your aftercare.

  • Is my tattoo supposed to scab?

Yes, tattoos are a lot like a cat scratch first they hurt, then they scab, then they itch, and lastly, they peel. All is a normal healing process for a tattoo. (Keep in mind color tattoos tend to peel more)

  • Can I drink after I get tattooed?

Yes, but moderately. The day before and the day of drinking alcohol should be at a minimum.

  • What do I wear the day of my appointment?

We recommend comfy clothes. If you are getting tattooed somewhere on your body that needs clothing removed, please dress accordingly (ex: Ladies bring bikini for rib or hip tattoos) Don’t wear any clothes that you don’t want to get dirty. Blood, plasma, and ink can get on clothes occasionally.

    Should I shave?

Not a necessity but, we greatly appreciate you shaving before your appointment.

  • What should I tip?

Tipping is not expected, but it is appreciated. Like any service, 15-20% is an average tip.

Do not pick at your tattoo! Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight, so no tanning. No swimming or bath tubs or hot tubs until the peeling process is done. You can continue to shower as normal.
